First edition divided into 5 volumes, the most complete published in Brussels, after those of 1706 and 1714 in 3 and 4 volumes respectively. It is “augmentée de plusieurs traittez, contrats, testamens & autres pieces". The first prepared by the famous jurist, Denis Godefroy (1549-1622) was published in Paris in 1649 in 1 folio vol.

It is illustrated with a frontispiece, 10 engraved portraits (V1: Philippe de Comines, Charles
Le Hardi, Louis XI, DUc de Clèves , René Roi de Naples et Sicile, Marie de Bourgogne fille de..., de Maximilien d'Autriche Empereur, François de Paul ; Vol.2 : 2 Portraits Charles VIII , Louis XII) +

Contemporary binding in full granite-patterned calf, spine with raised bands adorned with mosaic red morocco title label, smoked volume number compartment and an elegant decoration of lovely gilded stamping.

Good copy, fresh and clean, decorative set despite the normal damage to the bindings: the headcaps of the 3 volumes are cropped, missing fragments on the 3 title labels. Several corners are slightly blunted. Fresh and clean inside, some very pale sporadic foxing. Meticulously printed on laid paper. Title of volume 1 printed in red and black.

The memoirs of Philippe de Commynes or Philippe de Commines (1447-1511) make up valuable sources on the history of France and of Europe. They
are still being studied today. A great visionary, he noticed and deplored
the permanent antagonism between the nations of Europe and yearned for a Europe united by
Christianity. He advocated free trade, reform of currency and the system of weights and
measures as well as the consultation of States General in order to avoid any despotism.

Philippe de Commynes is the only medieval author whose work was read throughout the Middle Ages and
into the 20th century. Even François Villon did not have such luck. So there were no less than
120 editions between 1540 and 1643.
