"Famous memoirs that owe a lot to Balzac and admired by Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas. This is to say the prestige of these memoirs rich in curious anecdotes and pungent portraits. It was a considerable success. Edmond Biré, in his Mémoires et Souvenirs, writes an important part about them (Tome 1, pp. 115 to 130) Fierro, 3. Bertier, 2.
Born in 1784, married at sixteen, Laure Junot, Duchess of Abrantès, and her husband, were intimates of Josephine and Bonaparte and led a spendthrift and extravagant life. The Duke was entrusted with many missions by Napoleon, but after his death in 1813 the Duchess, impoverished, had to sell her husband's rich library and began a career as a writer to make a living. She met Balzac in 1825 and became his mistress, before dying in 1838 after a very humble end of life. Her Memoirs are teeming with anecdotes written in a simple and playful style.
