Thomas d'Aquin - Summa theologiae. Tertia pars & Svpplementvm ad tertiam partem - 1623
Bibeln, Philosophie, Religion, Schöne Einbände - Anzahl: 1 - Buch

First edition of the third part and its supplement (2 octavo volumes in one binding), complete in themselves, the only volumes published in 1623 of this very rare edition of the Summa theologiae by Thomas Aquinas (1224 or 1225-1274) were published in Lyon in 1623-1624, complete in 6 volumes. The 4 volumes of parts 1, 2.1, 2.2, and Quinque novi indices were published in 1624 and are missing here.

" A complete copy found in the catalogue of the city of Lyon, nothing in the Bibliothèque Nationale nor in the British Library, nor in the English catalogues" (see Feu Follet).

The production of this edition is undoubtedly, in part, thanks to Augustinus Hunnaeus (Hunnaeus of Mechelen, 1522-1577; a philosopher and theologian at the University of Leuven), whose work can be found in: De sacramentis Ecclesiae Christi axiomata quibus beati (Catholic Catechism... 1566) in the third volume; it is also known that he himself produced an edition of the Summa Theologica, and Pillehotte was to resume this. This edition is also the work of Julius Roscius Hortinus, the foreword writer, a Dominican friar as was Saint Thomas himself; this scholar and researcher produced several books of theology and studies, notably on the Romans.

Period full calfskin binding, spine with 4 raised bands adorned with repeated fleurons, a lovely embossing in the centre of the covers.

In fairly good overall condition. A sound volume, the aged leather has several small lacks (peeling) on the spine and on the cover edges, faded gilding. Inside, the two first leaves have lacks of paper in the margins with the loss of 2-3 letters of the address on the title page, scribbling on the back of the title page, water stains, mainly marginal, at the front and end, more significant on the last 20 (or so) leaves, several dogeared corners, scribbles on the flyleaves.

Towards the end of his short life, Thomas Aquinas (1224 or 1225-1274) wrote the Somme
théologique (Summa Theologiae) following the example of some twenty theologians who wrote
the same type of work during the 12th and 13th centuries, a literary genre whose aim is to
provide a complete and concise account of theological knowledge. This mature work is the
best known, not only of all medieval theologians, but also by Thomas
himself, after his Summa contra Gentiles, completed in 1264. As a scholastic master,
Thomas Aquinas offered students a type of textbook that presented
theology in an organic way. Adapting the Platonic theme of emanation and return, he studied everything in
relation to God. This explains the three-part structure of his great work. Prima pars:
emanation, God, principle and author of all things; Secunda pars: man, his ultimate
end and his action guided by the theological (faith, hope, charity) and cardinal (prudence,
justice, strength, temperance) virtues; Tertia pars: incarnation and sacraments, signs of God's return through
the flesh and the Spirit.
