【Product details】
This Japanese wakizashi dates from the Edo period and bears the signature of Daidō (大道), a swordsmith who previously signed as Kanemichi (兼道). Daidō is said to be a ninth-generation descendant of the famed Shizu Saburō Kaneuji and is counted among the finest smiths of the late Muromachi period, alongside Kanetsune and Kanefusa.
Works signed Kanemichi are known from as early as 1547 (Tenbun 16) and can be traced up to 1562 (Eiroku 5). According to the Daidōki chronicle, in the spring of 1569 (Eiroku 12), Kanemichi presented a masterful sword to Emperor Ōgimachi and, in recognition, was granted the honorary title Mutsunokami and the character "Dai" (大), thereafter signing as Daikanemichi and later Daidō.
Swords signed Daidō and bearing the title Mutsunokami appear from 1573 (Tenshō 1) to 1591 (Tenshō 19), showing continued activity across the Mino region, from Seki to Gifu.
Daidō is also regarded as the founder of the Mishina school, a major lineage in the early Shintō period. Around the Bunroku era (1592–1595), he is believed to have moved to Kyoto with his four sons—Kinmichi (Iganokami), Rai Kinmichi, Yoshimichi (Tanbanokami), and Masatoshi (Ecchūnokami)—where they settled in the Nishinotōin Ebisugawa district.
This sword comes with a photocopy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate from Kyoto Prefecture, number 10705, as the original document will be returned to the issuing authority. The certificate details are as follows: Type: Wakizashi. Length: 50.4 cm. Curvature: 1.0 cm. There are three peg holes. The inscription on the obverse reads 大道 (Daidō). The certificate was originally issued on December 13, 1955 (Shōwa 30), and reissued on September 19, 2024 (Reiwa 6).
Minor imperfections and natural patina are present due to age. There is green rust on the habaki, and a crack is visible in the wooden handle adjacent to it. The plain wooden scabbard does not close entirely, with a slight 2mm gap. The included silk bag shows staining and a tear at the end. Please refer to the photos for further condition details. The display stand is not included.
Length of the blade: 64 cm
Total length including scabbard: 74 cm
