Judaean Bronze Prutah, geprägt von Herodes I. 'dem Großen' (Ohne Mindestpreis)
An ancient bronze coin, minted in Judaea, by Herod I 'The Great', and known as a prutah. The obverse features a small closed diadem, encompassed by a legend which probably reads ΗPΩΔOΥ ΒΑCΙΛΕΩΣ. The reverse displays a tripod. Wear to the coin as consistent with age.
These bronze coins, known as prutah, were minted and distributed in Judaea under Herod I 'The Great', who was Roman Jewish client king, granted the title 'King of Judea' by the Roman Senate. He overthrew Antigonus II Mattathias, ending the Hasmonean dynasty, and upon the death of Herod I, he passed his title onto his sons, starting the Herodian dynasty. He is best remembered for his colossal building projects in Judea, which included the rebuilding of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
Diameter: (circa) 1.4cm
Weight: 0.97g
Provenance: Ex Cambridgeshire private collection, acquired 1970s.
