Bronzezeit Bronze Kurzschwert

A fine Bronze Age bronze short-sword, featuring a solid-cast guard and a triangular blade that tapers to a point. The weapon displays a cylindrical, flanged hilt with a crescentic wedge-shaped pommel in which an inlay plaque would have originally been placed. Two ridges have been added to the sides of the hilt to aid with the grip. A beautiful green patination remains on the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as chips to the edges of the blade and pommel, as well as scratches throughout. In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the Western Asiatic area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Archaeological evidence suggests that the bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts. Measurements: L 42.3cm x W 5.8cm Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990-present. N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
