Sumatra, Sultanat Jambi. 2x Jambi lion coins 1000-1350 AD, (Ohne Mindestpreis)

Sumatra - Jambi sultanate, AE lion coin, Only a few of this type coins have been reported, rare, XF for issue Obv.: lion bust facing left with an oddly raised snout, above an umbrella as a simple T-shape, fly whisks to the left and right, with an outer border of dots / rev.: full body lion facing left, one paw raised, holding a string. This is part of an unpublished series of struck bronze and silver coins, in short called Jambi lion coins, that have been appearing from an ancient port site downstream of Jambi in Sumatra. The Jambi lion coins have been completely unknown prior to the dredging and diving of the port Muara Kumpeh. Other coins found at the site include Sumatran sandalwood coins, Chinese cash, Chola bronze, and other South Indian pieces. Other colonial period coins have also been reported. Ceramics at the site said point towards a Northern and Southern Song period circulation into the port, with some potential from the Yuan period. One knowledgeable source reported that the ceramics from this Jambi port appear to have ended by the Ming Dynasty, at the latest. These foreign coins and artifacts point towards a suggestive date of c. 1000-1350 AD for this site and the Jambi lion coins. It seems that these are a local coinage for Jambi, although they could have had a narrow circulation area of downstream Jambi around the Muara Kumpeh site given the lack of findings during river dredging at other Jambi locations. Actual dimensions: diameter: 16,5 & 14.3 mm, Weigth: 5.4 & 2.9 gram. Please take a good look at the photos, they are part of the description. They provide a clear picture of the quality and condition of the product and they fill in any gaps in the text or correct any errors and are decisive for the description of the product. ID: 3347
