Altes Ägypten, Neues Reich Fayence Frog Amulett
An Ancient Egyptian blue faience frog amulet. The crouching frog has been rendered naturalistically, with its legs folded and its head raised upwards. The back of the frog features incised dorsal lines, depicting its anatomy. The amulet is pierced laterally. The frog rests upon an oval base. Minor chip to the top left corner to the obverse and bottom of the reverse of the base.
Popular with young women and children, frog amulets were important symbols in Ancient Egypt. The belief that frogs spontaneously generated from marshlands linked them to Heqat, the goddess of childbirth, and concepts of birth and resurrection.
Measurements: (circa) L 1.2cm x W 1cm
Provenance: Ex. early 20th century UK collection
