        Berlin, May 2, 2022 - More and more artists are increasingly using digital means to sell their art - and with great success. Catawiki, the leading online auction marketplace for special objects, has released new data showing the growing percentage of artworks sold on their platform and how they are using it to help artists and creatives around the world achieve greater business autonomy.


        Annual sales of up to 100,000 euros through Catawiki

        Since Catawiki expanded its trade to the art scene in 2019, thousands of artists have sold almost 150,000 unique works of art on the online auction marketplace. Every week up to 1,000 items are auctioned directly by artists and designers on Catawiki. Each item is carefully reviewed and selected beforehand by one of hundreds of in-house experts specializing in collectibles, art, design, crafts and various other categories. Since the sellers on Catawiki keep the majority of their income, last year alone several hundred creative people were able to achieve annual sales of more than 10,000 euros each, some even more than 100,000 euros.         Catawiki as a global marketplace for artists

        On Catawiki, artists have the opportunity to reach global audiences, as well as increase their income and exposure. The global presence of the online marketplace in over 60 countries generates almost 80 percent of artists’ foreign earnings. In Germany alone, around 15,000 works of art have been sold directly by the artists on Catawiki since 2019. The most popular German artists include Parscha Mirghawameddin, Florentina Gumpert and Florian Maiorescu. The fastest growing artists in Germany are Volker Rossenbach, Manuel Benchico, Carolina Amaya, Elena Wuest and Daniel Witschkanow.

        Promotion of the creative industry beyond pandemic times 

        According to the information in the "Monitoring Report Cultural and Creative Industries 2021", a total of almost 50,000 people were active in the art market in 2020. A total of around 1.4 billion euros were turned over, 39 percent less than in the previous year. The sales of self-employed visual artists fell the most (-50 percent), which caused economic difficulties for many creative people. Catawiki represents an attractive source of income for their financial and social well-being and cooperates with the artists themselves as well as with various galleries.
