前田正博 Maeda Masahiro(1948- ) — Owl Motif Porcelain Vase
This captivating porcelain vase is the work of Maeda Masahiro, one of Japan's most internationally celebrated contemporary ceramic artists. Standing just 13 cm tall, this compact yet commanding piece showcases his celebrated "yōsai" (洋彩) technique — a method he developed in the late 1980s in which Western-style pigments are applied in multiple layered coats using masking tape, then selectively scratched away to reveal the underlying clay texture, producing a richly mottled turquoise-and-charcoal surface of remarkable tactile depth.
Set against this dramatic ground are multiple incised owl figures — the signature motif that has defined Maeda's artistic identity since around 1980 — rendered with confident, expressive linework scratched directly into the pigment layers. The owls emerge from panels of natural clay tone, framed by sweeping fields of teal and graphite that lend the composition a bold, graphic energy reminiscent of both ancient cave art and modern abstract painting.
The narrow neck opens into a graceful everted rim decorated in contrasting warm white glaze with flowing coral-red brushwork — an elegant counterpoint to the earthy intensity of the body below. Viewed from above, the foot area reveals a striking geometric composition of turquoise and raw clay triangles radiating outward like a star, centered on a vivid coral-red foot ring bearing the artist's incised seal mark in gold.
This vase is a fine example of Maeda's lifelong pursuit of bringing free artistic expression into the world of Japanese decorative ceramics — bold, original, and deeply collectible. In European tradition, the owl has long symbolised wisdom and good fortune — here it is immortalised by a master of Japanese contemporary ceramics.
