Typed manuscript or typescript on carbon paper of the letters written by Marc Chagall to the Belgian writer and art critic André de Ridder. The manuscript contains 51 pages including 42 letters, numbered 1 to 40, 24B and 36B. Some of the letters were already edited in preparation for the publication, while others were handwritten at the bottom in ink or biro.
The manuscript also contains a 5-page introduction written by Marc Chagall (possibly in Russian) translated by Madame Marc Chagall which bears the provisional title ‘Ma Vie (titre provisoire)’.
In addition, the manuscript contains a 3-page bibliography of the most important books and studies devoted to Chagall and a one-page biographical note on Chagall.
The first letter was written on 19 April 1924 and the last on 4 February 1961. Most of the letters cover the period 1924 to 1934.
The intention was to have this manuscript published as a book “Chagall. Génie du Nord”, but that project was cancelled.
Provenance: purchased at an auction in Antwerp.
A similar book entitled “Ossip Zadkine, Lettres à André de Ridder” was published in 1963 by Librairie des Arts, Antwerp.
I don't know why the book with the letters of Marc Chagall to André de Ridder was not published.
