Beautiful old freely carved bird sculpture from the Port Port region between the Sepik and Ramu estuaries.
Bird sculptures were considered to be intermediaries between heaven and earth, they played an important cultural role on the Sepik. This bird is not a fragment, but a complete piece.
Provenance: Late anthropologist D.A. Eichhorn, Herne, Germany, acquired in 1987.
