Περιγραφή
Φλοιός (1) - Treebark - Tapa - 145 εκ - Marquesas Islands
Mid 20th century - Μέτρια

Magnificent and ancient Marquesan Tapa of large dimensions, the drawings were applied with black ink on a beige background, on wood bark, probably mulberry tree. This technique is traditional of Maohi tribal art, in the style of Marquesan tribal tattoos. The warrior spirit of these remote islands is strongly present and illustrates the ancient and rediscovered power of the Maohi people.
Wood bark was beaten with a beater for a long time on specific stone to stretch the fibres, in order to soften them more and to enlarge the surface.
This technique enabled to craft textiles destined to create clothing.
1300 mm long by 730 mm.
This Tapa was very likely crafted in the 1950s and was brought back to France in the 1970s by a collector of Oceanian tribal art, especially from French Polynesia.
The object will be carefully packaged and sent via Mondial Relay with insurance.
