Πινακίδα (1) - Ξύλο - lagim - Massim - Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea
2nd half 20th century - Καλή

The islands of the Massim region in southeastern Papua New Guinea are known for their ancient and continuous exchange of ceremonial valuables and other objects between the islands. The most elaborate of these exchanges is known as kula and is carried out in richly decorated sea canoes. This beautiful splash board is from the Massim culture in the southeast of New Guinea. It was acquired by a couple who sailed the Pacific. It is made of hardwood and is exquisitely carved with a black surface. The word gada is engraved on the back. It is in a very good condition for its age.
