Richard Christopher Wakeman CBE (born 18 May 1949) - is an English keyboardist, songwriter, producer, television and radio presenter, actor and author. He is best known for being in the progressive rock band Yes across five tenures between 1971 and 2004 and for his solo albums released in the 1970s. Although Wakeman is a well-known player of the grand piano, electric piano, pipe organ, Hammond organ, Minimoog, and many newer synthesizer models, he is known (for a while) as a proponent of the Mellotron - an analog electronic musical instrument that uses a bank of pre-recorded magnetic tape strips, each of which is activated by a separate key on its keyboard and takes approximately 8 seconds to complete. Wakeman played this instrument to varying degrees on the David Bowie track "Space Oddity", the Yes albums Fragile, Close to the Edge and Tales From Topographic Oceans, and the solo albums The Six Wives of Henry VIII and White Rock. Wakeman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes.
