The Ciwara is composed of the words Bamanan Ci = Work and Wara = lion, the Ciwara, carved, is not a mask, but a crest, held at the top of the head thanks to a small reed hat. In the Bamanan environment, the Ciwara, after several initiation stages, rewards the greatest workers in all areas of working life. Representing the legendary Bambara antelope, the Ciwara is therefore the symbol of courage, self-sacrifice and wisdom. Like the chimera, the dragon, the mermaid or the medusa, the Ciwara has become a contagious theme, an exuberant symbol, which is in the life of all the curious of Africa. The carved, engraved and patinated wooden Ciwara have brought world fame to the Bamanan art of Mali, by celebrating the mythical union between the sun and the earth, by stimulating the hard work of young farmers.
