Powerful Dragon is a metal sculpture by Zuihō from Japan, dating from circa 1985–1995, measuring 13 cm high by 24 cm wide by 4 cm deep, in good condition with signs of aging.
Description from the seller
This is a striking Japanese metal art sculpture depicting a powerful dragon, created by the artist Zuihō (瑞峰). The dragon is rendered in an elongated, dynamic form that stretches across the base, conveying a strong sense of movement and vitality. The sculpture is cast in metal and finished with a verdigris (greenish patina) surface accented by selectively applied gold highlights on the scales, claws, mane, and tail, creating a dramatic contrast that enhances the three-dimensional texture of the work.
The dragon’s body is fluidly curved, suggesting mid-air motion, while its head is raised with an open mouth grasping a slender metal rod. In its front claw, the dragon holds a gilt sacred orb (宝珠, hōju), a traditional symbol in East Asian art representing wisdom, power, and good fortune. Fine sculptural details can be observed in the layered scales, muscular limbs, and expressive facial features, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity.
The sculpture is mounted on a dark, molded plastic base with a gently contoured shape that resembles polished wood, providing stability while allowing the dragon to be displayed cleanly and safely. The overall composition balances strength and elegance, making this an impressive decorative artwork suitable for collectors of Japanese metalwork, dragon motifs, or traditional Asian art.
Based on stylistic characteristics and typical production periods for similar works, this piece is estimated to date from the late Shōwa to early Heisei period (circa 1985–1995).
