Description from the seller

Rare Antique Bamboo Birdcage – Complex Multi-Level Oriental Craftsmanship – 20th Century.
Descrizione:
Rare and fascinating bamboo and wood birdcage of oriental artisanal manufacture, made with traditional techniques and characterized by a complex, multi-level architectural structure, increasingly difficult to find in this complete form today.
The cage is distinguished by its elegant configuration of stacked bodies, with a sloped roof inspired by traditional Chinese architecture. The entire structure is composed of slender natural bamboo slats, carefully shaped and assembled with manual joints, without the use of modern screws.
Distinctive elements:
- Multi-level construction, with separate interior compartments.
- Side doors that open, with a traditional interlocking closing system.
- Passing cylindrical bamboo perch, original.
- Lower base with removable bottom, for collecting debris.
- Upper suspension element with original metal ring.
- Articulated roof, a rare feature in common-use cages.
Together, the piece presents a visually striking object, elegant and harmonious, that goes beyond simple utilitarian function to reside in the realm of artistic artisanry.
Era:
First half of the 20th century (circa 1920–1960)
Materials:
Natural bamboo and wood, original metal elements:
Dimensions
Height: approx. 50 cm
Maximum width: approx. 36 cm
Depth: approx. 37 cm
Condition:
Good overall condition, with an authentic patina of age.
There are slight signs of use, minor irregularities and the natural darkening of the bamboo, fully consistent with the object's age and appreciable from a collector's perspective.
Stable and complete structure, small imperfections but not significant.
Brief historical note:
In China and Southeast Asia, from the late 19th to the early 20th century, keeping canaries represented a genuine cultural and social tradition. The more elaborate cages, such as this multi-level example, were intended for affluent owners and reflected aesthetic taste, status, and respect for nature.
Bamboo, a symbol of balance and longevity, was chosen for its strength and lightness, as well as its symbolic value. Today these objects are sought after both as ethnographic pieces from the period and as highly distinctive decorative elements.
Shipping and packaging:
Tracked and insured shipment.
The item will be professionally packed, with multi-layer protection (bubble wrap, rigid reinforcements, and double cardboard) to preserve the delicacy of the bamboo structure during transport.
