About the Woodstock Festival (1969) The Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place from August 15 to 18, 1969, on a farm in Bethel, New York, and is still regarded as the most significant music festival of all time. Originally planned for about 50,000 visitors, more than 400,000 people eventually made their way to the site – despite rain, mud, traffic jams, and supply shortages. Woodstock became a symbol of the peace movement, counterculture, and the idealism of the 1960s. The motto “3 Days of Peace & Music” truly came to life: despite the difficult conditions, there was an atmosphere of community, tolerance, and musical freedom. One of the most memorable moments was Jimi Hendrix’s emotional rendition of the U.S. national anthem, which became a musical symbol of the era.
