Terracotta painted sculpture titled Max & Moritz by Bernhard Bloch from Eichwald, Bohemia, dating to ca. 1880–1900, with dimensions 24 cm high, 15 cm wide and 10 cm deep, weight 1527 g, signed and with serial number 4778 and character names incised on the base, structurally intact with a patina and minor loss of original polychromy on the hair.
Description from the seller
Fascinating and rare antique terracotta sculpture painted (siderolite), depicting the famous mischievous Max and Moritz, protagonists of Wilhelm Busch's well-known illustrated stories.
The work was created by the prestigious Bernhard Bloch manufactory in Eichwald, Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic), at the end of the 19th century.
The plastic quality is excellent: the cunning expressions and the details of the costumes are rendered with great realism and character, typical of Bloch's high-end productions. On the back of the base there is a compartment that originally served as a jardinière (flower box) or storage box. In front of the base the names of the two characters are carved.
Manufacturer: Bernhard Bloch (Brand "BB" and symbol, perhaps a crowned shield, carved under the base).
Model: serial number 4778 carved under the base.
Material: painted terracotta.
Height: 24 cm.
Weight: 1527 g.
Period: circa 1880-1900.
Origin: Eichwald, Bohemia (Austro-Hungarian Empire).
Condition: the item is structurally intact, with no evident restorations. It shows a beautiful antique patina with natural signs of aging and losses of the original polychromy, particularly on the top of the hair, which underscore its authenticity and historic charm. (Please view the photos carefully as they are an integral part of the description).
Attention: we strive to accurately represent the colors and textures of the product in our photos. However, due to natural lighting conditions and photography, and differences between monitor or display devices, there may be slight variations in color or tone between the photos and the actual product.
