Description from the seller

[BIBLE DE VENCE] - CALMET (Dom Augustin)

The Holy Bible in Latin and in French [...]

Paris, at Gabriel Martin, J.B. Coignard, Pierre Jean Mariette, Hyppolyte-Louis Guerin, 1749.

1 volume in-4 only (25 x 19.5 cm), marbled calf (binding of the period), spine with raised bands ornate, title and pagination pieces in morocco, triple rule framing on the boards, double gilt border on the edges, marbled edges, [4]-789 pages (complete volume). Corners worn, tear at the tail crown, slight loss of angular leather on the lower board. Good condition.

Volume IV only, illustrated with 15 folding plates.

Original edition of this famous Bible, also known as the Bible of Vence.

The “literal notes, prefaces and dissertations” are drawn from the “Commentary” published between 1707 and 1716, by the Benedictine Augustin Calmet (1672-1757). Dom Calmet, through his rigorous analysis and his new literal commentaries in French, revolutionized biblical criticism. His text became a standard reference and served as the basis for many “Holy Bibles” that appeared from 1748 until the end of the 19th century, even though from 1748 his commentaries were transformed and revised.

Pleasant copy.
