Description from the seller

[BIBLE OF VENCE] - CALMET (Dom Augustin)

The Holy Bible in Latin and in French [...]

Paris, at Gabriel Martin, J.B. Coignard, Pierre Jean Mariette, Hyppolite-Louis Guerin, 1749.

1 volume in-4 only (25 x 19.5 cm), marbled calf (binding of the period), spine with raised bands ornamented, title and volume labels in morocco leather, triple rule border on the boards, double gilt rule on the edges, marbled edges, [2]-ii-841 pages (complete volume). Corners worn, capitals rubbed, brown stain on the upper edge. Overall good condition.

Volume VIII only.

Original edition of this famous Bible, also known as the Bible of Vence.

The “literal notes, prefaces and dissertations” are drawn from the “Commentary” published between 1707 and 1716, by the Benedictine Augustine Calmet (1672-1757). Dom Calmet, through his rigorous analysis and his new literal French comments, revolutionized biblical criticism. His text became a standard reference and served as the basis for many Bibles that appeared from 1748 to the end of the 19th century, even though as early as 1748 his commentaries were transformed and revised.

A pleasant copy.
