Description from the seller
[Complete Works of Cicero]
Marcus Tullius Cicero, Opera omnia.
Geneva, Chouet, 1617.
The present is a rare complete edition of Cicero's works in four parts, bound together in one volume. The edition follows the scholarly edition by Denis Lambin (Lambinus, 1520–1572) and Jacques Godefroy (Gothofredus, 1549–1622), two eminent humanists and editors, whose textual-critical work contributed substantially to the transmission of classical Latin literature.
The work comprises Cicero's rhetorical, philosophical, and political writings, and thus stands as an exemplar of the continuity of Roman antiquity in the learned book culture of the early 17th century. As statesman, orator, and philosopher, Cicero is among the most influential authors in European intellectual history; his works shaped humanism, rhetoric, legal thinking, and political theory for centuries.
The edition is especially appealing due to its contemporaneous binding as well as the woodcut title border. The white sheets inserted between the individual parts with handwritten intermediate titles refer to its historical use and give the volume additional individual character.
23.5 x 16 cm, pages continuously numbered in two columns: 436 + 958 + 635 + 714 (1273 pp.), rubbed full-leather binding of the period with gold tooling on the spine. Interior somewhat browned, otherwise well preserved. individual notes in old ink hand. A very collectible complete edition.
