Born in Eberswalde near Berlin, Germany in 1927. After studying at the art school in Hamburg, he taught printmaking techniques at a university. In 1959, he began creating lithographs and oil paintings in earnest. In 1962, his lithographs attracted attention in Paris, and he continued to produce works in printmaking, oil painting, watercolor, and sculpture. In 1963, he held his first solo exhibitions abroad in Miami and San Francisco, and won numerous international art prizes.
