With this portrait-format work (40 × 60 cm), Medsan guides us into a scene of deep intimacy, capturing the mysterious grace and refinement of private Edo-period rooms. Drawing on the great tradition of bijinga (portraits of beautiful women) in ukiyo-e, this unique print places a young woman at the heart of a suspended moment of introspection, kneeling before a tall standing mirror that reflects her magnetic image.

The visual poetry and the discreet sensuality of the composition reside in this double gaze and the richness of the details surrounding it. Draped in a sumptuous crimson kimono with delicately embroidered motifs, the courtesan hints at the nacre of her shoulders as she holds the fabric against her bust. Beside her, a black cat with an piercing gaze has slipped into the room, bringing a mystical and silent presence. In the foreground, a lacquered coffee table hosts a partially revealed scroll of painting, calligraphy brushes, and a mysterious vial from which a fine curl of perfumed smoke escapes.

The impact of the composition is masterfully highlighted by the backdrop screen (byōbu), entirely adorned with giant peonies in vibrant red, traditional symbols of beauty, love, and prosperity. The scene is bathed in the warm, dim glow of a hanging paper lantern, which enhances the contrasts and cloaks the room in a muffled atmosphere. The treatment of lines and the patina of aged paper scrupulously respect the codes of classic Japanese woodblock prints while infusing them with a modern, hypnotic graphical sensibility.
