Two Chinese Gilt-Decorated Luohan Figures, impressed seal 曾龍昇造 (Zeng Longsheng), Republic period
Two Chinese gilt-decorated ceramic figures depicting Luohan, each seated on a pierced rock-form base and rendered with highly expressive facial features and dynamic postures. The figures are impressed to the underside with an archaic-script seal reading 曾龍昇造 (Made by Zeng Longsheng), a name associated with figural ceramic production active in the early–mid 20th century. The modeling, expressive treatment, and gilded surface decoration correspond to established Luohan sculptural types documented in Chinese art historical publications, where similar exaggerated devotional figures are illustrated as part of larger Luohan traditions. These examples are offered together as two individual figures of the same sculptural and workshop tradition. Republic period, circa 1920–1940.
