Description from the seller
Wilfried Otto (1901–1989).
Etching, 1932.
Handsigned.
Mounted on a passe-partout.
Passe-partout window: 26.5 x 16.5 cm. Antique frame with glass. Size 40.5 x 31 cm.
With some controlled foxing. Plate in perfect condition.
A very interesting work by the painter and set designer Wilfried Otto, a key figure in the New Objectivity ("Neue Sachlichkeit") movement during the interwar period. His style portrayed the reality of the Weimar era with a cold, sharp focus, often imbued with urban melancholy or veiled social criticism. This print largely revives the expressionist style of the early years of the avant-garde. His work was banned and confiscated by the Nazi regime under the classification of degenerate art ("Entartete Kunst") in 1937.
A fascinating work. And very rare.
