Sawankhalok celadon stoneware dish from Thailand, 10 cm high and 30 cm in diameter, dating to the 14th–16th century, with minor surface wear and slight edge chipping.
Description from the seller
Grand celadon stoneware dish from Sukhothai / Si Satchanalai (Sawankhalok)
Thailand, 14th – 16th century
Height 10 cm x diameter 30 cm
This piece is a remarkable testimony to Sawankhalok ceramics, produced during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. Strongly influenced by the Chinese Longquan celadons, Thai potters developed a distinctive style of their own. These large lobed dishes were prestige pieces highly prized, widely exported throughout maritime Southeast Asia, particularly to Indonesia and the Philippines.
Important circular hollow dish in stoneware with a polygon-lobed rim in a bloom form, featuring a finely incised decoration under a translucent greenish glaze that is crackled, with a delicate olive-green to gray-green hue. The basin is centered by an inset medallion defined by two concentric circles. The rim is adorned with an elegant band of incised undulating motifs simulating waves or stylized aquatic vines, framed by circular netting. The external wall is fully animated by vertical fluted patterns radiating like stylized lotus petals. The edge expands into a flared lip, subtly cut into regular lobes resembling the corolla of a blooming flower.
The reverse shows a bare foot, revealing the ferruginous fired earth in a brownish-orange/brick tone, typical of Si Satchanalai kiln productions. One can discern the gray circular mark left by the potter’s wheel (stillage on a tubular refractory support).
Condition: The stoneware features a thick celadon glaze that has accumulated in places in the incised lines, enhancing the design and revealing a tight network of natural cracks. In generally good condition for a piece of this age. Minor surface wear, small air bubbles that burst within the glaze during firing, and discreet alterations on the lip edge indicating its age and authenticity. Small chip and slight restoration at one spot on the lip edge.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
