Description from the seller

Portariviste - Pipe Smokers - Liberty & Co. Caxton
Unusual and elegant oak magazine rack or document holder in the Arts & Crafts style from the Edwardian period by Liberty & Co, dating from about 1904. Made of solid oak wood with visible grain, it features two hinged, spring-assisted shelves for storing newspapers and magazines, and a lower compartment for resting books equipped with a sliding bookmark. The edges are shaped and curved, the original brass top handle, through-dovetail joints visible, and the carved wooden feet. It has two hidden drawers: one for pipes and the other for tobacco and matches with brass knobs. In excellent condition, beautiful original warm patina. It bears no maker’s mark, but this piece was advertised in Liberty & Co’s 1903 Christmas gift catalogue and is pictured on page 217 of Daryl Bennett’s book “Liberty's Furniture 1875-1915.”
