Saint Stiliano of Paphlagonia — Depicted as an elderly man with a long, thick white beard, a symbol of wisdom and spiritual asceticism
His gaze is frontal, stern but benevolent, typical of Eastern sacred icon painting.
In his left arm the Saint holds a newborn wrapped in protective swaddling bands [image
This element is his principal iconographic attribute and attests to his role as patron and protector of children, infants, and mothers who invoke fertility.
With his right hand he supports a relief Latin cross, emblem of his total dedication to the Christian faith and to the ascetic life. At shoulder height there are two cartouches engraved in Greek letters identifying the Saint: on the left Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ (The Saint) and on the right ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΟΣ (Stiliano)
