Description from the seller
Elegant glazed earthenware vase produced by Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière and dated 1953, as indicated by the painted inscription under the base. This piece is part of the series of re-interpretations carried out in the mid-20th century based on the historic models of the famous Delft Painters’ Chamber, an exceptional workshop installed within the Belgian manufacture at the end of the 19th century. The vase faithfully captures the decorative spirit of the neo-Delft productions that contributed to Boch Frères’ artistic fame, while benefiting from the high standard of craftsmanship characteristic of the post-war period.
The model presents a particularly harmonious silhouette composed of a slightly flared socle with softened facets, a generously developed globular body, and a long swollen neck ending in a slightly horn-shaped opening. The whole is coated with a glossy glaze in deep cobalt blue tones, animated by marbling and lighter variations that give the surface a lively and nuanced appearance. The body is decorated with irregular white reserves hosting stylized bouquets made of blue flowers with golden ochre centers, accompanied by green foliage and small purplish berries. The neck repeats this ornamental vocabulary with isolated floral motifs, while a cream-yellow ring bearing a delicate vegetal frieze provides the transition between the different parts of the vase. The interior is entirely glazed in a bright cream white.
The condition is remarkable. No chips, cracks, restorations or accidents to report. The glazes have retained their full brilliance and the painted decorations their original freshness. The base bears the handwritten mark of Boch Frères Keramis together with the number “53,” perfectly legible.
Founded in 1841 in La Louvière, Boch Frères Keramis quickly established itself as one of the most important ceramic manufactories in continental Europe. From the 1880s, the creation of the Delft Painters’ Chamber enabled the development of an artistic production inspired by Dutch majolica, while lending it a distinctly Belgian sensibility. The reissues produced in the 1950s demonstrate the manufactory’s commitment to preserving this decorative heritage while reinterpreting its most emblematic historical models. This vase perfectly illustrates this continuity between tradition and renewal that characterizes Keramis’ history in the 20th century.
