Four bottles of Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casaccia — a consecutive vertical of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 — one of Montalcino’s most exciting single-vineyard expressions, from one of the appellation’s most celebrated and historic estates. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, one of the 12 original founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra has become one of Montalcino’s most sought-after producers. The Vigna La Casaccia, planted in 1990 on brown calcareous clay soils on the northeast side of Montalcino, was introduced as a single-vineyard wine in 2015 — with production limited to just 3,000-4,000 bottles per vintage. The 2016, from one of Tuscany’s greatest recent vintages, delivers balsamic-tinged black cherry, sage, Indian spice, tobacco and salty minerals — velvety textures with a tannic heft that promises over a decade of further development. The 2017, from a warm and generous vintage, offers a more opulent, fleshy profile with sweet dark fruit and excellent structure. The 2018, produced in only 3,733 bottles, reveals crushed rocks, flowery underbrush, dried strawberry and violet — silky, elegant and beautifully balanced. The 2019 is the showstopper — earthy, mineral, smoky and animal, with violets, dried black cherries, sage, clove and a salty finish of extraordinary length.
