Pentax Electro Spotmatic ES + SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8 Analogue camera
PENTAX Electro Spotmatic ES + SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8, tested and working.
Hello from Japan!
We provide high-quality cameras and lenses to the world.
The Asahi Pentax Electro Spotmatic of 1971 holds a genuine place in camera history: it was the first M42 screw-mount SLR with aperture-priority automatic exposure, and one of the first anywhere to use an electronically timed shutter for stepless speeds. Sold under the Electro Spotmatic name in Japan and as the Spotmatic ES elsewhere, it meters at full aperture with SMC Takumar lenses and will choose any speed from 1/1000 down to a full eight seconds on its own. It is markedly less common than the mechanical Spotmatics, and the SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8 supplied with it is among the most admired standard lenses ever made, still widely adapted to digital cameras today.
Important — please read carefully:
The pentaprism has been replaced during servicing, and automatic exposure runs bright in strong light. Please review the photos and consider this before bidding.
Condition: Used — Good
Pre-owned, distinct signs of use or minor optical flaws
Serial Number
Please check the photo.
Appearance

Optical Condition
Finder: Clear and bright — the pentaprism has been replaced.
Lens / Sensor: Cleaned internally — clear.
Functional
The camera operates properly — see the measured shutter figures below (1/48 at 1/60 and 1/1030 at 1/1000).
Aperture-priority automatic exposure works: the electronically timed shutter selects speeds steplessly. A battery is required for automatic mode.
Metering measured about +0.8 EV at EV12 and +2.3 EV at EV15, so exposure runs bright in high light levels.
The pentaprism has been replaced with a clean one, the lens cleaned internally and the light seals replaced.
Measured Performance
We check these cameras on a shutter tester rather than by ear, and we publish what we measured:
- 1/60 — measured 1/48 s (approx. 0.3 stop slow)
- 1/1000 — measured 1/1030 s (on the mark)
- Light meter accuracy — EV12: 0.8 OVER / EV15: 2.3 OVER
Negative film has enough latitude to absorb deviations of this size, but the figures are here so you can judge for yourself.
Servicing
This camera was serviced by us before listing:
- Lens cleaned internally
- Light seals (foam) replaced
- Pentaprism replaced
Known Issues
1. The pentaprism has been replaced during our servicing, so that part is not the one the camera left the factory with. The viewfinder is clean and bright as a result.
2. Automatic exposure runs bright in strong light (about +2.3 EV at EV15). Set the film speed higher to compensate in bright conditions, or use the mechanical speeds.
Bundled Items
