Large BENIN Bronze Leopard head - Nigeria - Benin City Region

For the Benin, the leopard is a mighty and powerful royal animal which reigns over the Savannah, like a king over his subjects. It also serves as a symbol of justice. The details of these figurines are beautiful, the tribal figurations are sublime.

This bronze figure was made by the "cire perdue" method. In other words, the lost wax method.
The mould is lost during the casting process. Therefore, it is a unique piece.
Because of the primitive casting process, the sculpture presents some casting flaws, have a look at the pictures.
Magnificently finished off in detail, it has a beautiful patina.
