A ritual bird sculpture. These sculptures were placed around the Sakalava graves, bird sculptures were combined with human figures.
The birds were the carriers of the sole to heaven, but also the symbol of fertility and long life love.
The Sakalava skulpture has a very powerfull expression of ‘love, death, sexuality and fecondity’.
Most of the statues go back to the 19th century.

Piece sold by Esprit de l’Art - Belgium. The galery is based in front of the museum of fine Arts in Antwerp – Belgium for more then 25 years.
The gallery specialises in Chinese archaeology, from the Neolithic period (2000 BC) up until the Ming Dynasty (14th-17th century), as well as tribal art from Madagascar and Africa.
The owners, Bruno Laurent and Lut Decleer, have been visiting China and Africa for many years.
During this time they have forged an invaluable network of local contacts and are able to provide high quality objects.
