African Mwaash Ngady mask - KUBA - Congo (RDC) - good condition
Collected between 1960-70 BY A BELGIAN ANTHROPOLOGIST living in Antwerp.

A portrait mask of the first Kuba king wife.
There are more than twenty different types of masks that function within the men's initiation society. The Kuba Ngaady mask represents the ideal of beauty. It is one of three important Kuba mask, on the old picture taken at Mushenge in 1909 shows a similar mask: Ngady aMwaash, Bwoom, and Mosh'ambooy mu shall.
The triangles on the mask’s face represent hearthstones, and the diagonal lines extending below the eyes symbolize tears, evoking hardship. Though it represents a woman, the mask is performed by a man.

Size: 44 cm on its included metal base , 36 cm without.
Conditin: Very good condition, one ear slightly abrased.

CONDITION: Shiny patina One chip missing on the back on the above part of the rim, abrasions around the eyes missing the original metal, ( see pictures)
