PROVENANCE: United Kingdom collection. Woolley & Wallis Antiquities, Pre-Columbian & Tribal Art

ORIGIN: Fang Betsi, Gabon

Age: mid 20th century.

HEIGHT: 48 cm on a custom made metal stand ( included in your package ).

USE: To honor Ancestors.Despite it's ancient aspect it was probably made for decoration.

Fang Betsi style figure, with brass sheet on eyes , mouth and nose. Hands joined together on the belly.

CONDITION: Aged aspect due to insect damages ( nothing alive ), offerings and cracks in the wood. It is possible to see the wood growing lines.
A custom made metal stand is included in your package .

The statue is in a damaged state, parts missing due to insects like the back of one arm and cracks ( see images), making some parts of the statue missing or deteriorated but this wild aspect is what makes the figure attractive.

The Fang ("Pahouin") figures where discovered in Europe before the First World War, and celebrated by members of the Avant-Garde making them among the most sought after figures in African Art, almost all came from the coastal area of South-Kamerun. Ngumba Mabea figures, which now make up the most limited and individual corpus within Fang statuary, were immediately acquired by German museums (for instance the Berlin Museum für Völkerkunde) or entered the English and Parisian market.
