PROVENANCE: Gaethan Schoonbroodt collection, Verviers.

ORIGIN: The Idoma inhabit the lower western areas of Benue State, Nigeria, and kindred groups can be found in Cross Rivers State in Nigeria.

USE: These masks where used to honor deceased ancestors, they believe the masks provide a good afterlife and are danced during the funeral ceremonies.

The Igbo people are an ethnic group native to the present-day south-central and southeastern Nigeria. Geographically, the Igbo homeland is divided into two unequal sections by the Niger River – an eastern and a western section.

CONDITION: Mostly dry patina, shiny on top. Oxidized wood due to aging, kaolin, black pigments and, red tokula in the ears. Some chips missing on the back on the above and lower part of the rim, insect damages on the inside, abrasions of the white Phemba pigments above the lips and forehead, around the eyes some chips missing, ( see pictures- attention some of the pictures show the white mask a bit more yellow than in reality since it is covered with white pigments)
