A Cubistic little South East Songye Nkishi with animal hair on top. Fine glossy patina. Elongated neck.

Songye's are powerful objects to heal and protect.
Diamond shaped carving.
The hair on top has been added by the nganga to the wooden sculpture,
Height= 29cm.
The face has sensitively rendered cubistic features, and proturing chin.
Early XXth century.
Provenance: Gaetan Schoonbroodt, collection, Verviers, Belgium.

Mankishi were used for a community’s well-being, assuring fertility, protecting against illnesses, and generally keeping malevolent forces at bay.

The figure has a nice layered patina attesting good age and use. Hard wood.
