This is a couple of seldom Urhobo Ivwri shirne figures.
PROVENANCE: - Bought from Campo in Antwerp-Belgium. Private Estate.
H= 26 cm seated Peddler.
H= 28 cm standing warrior. One hand missing
The holes in the hand show maybe some inserted parts are missing ( peddle, knife ?) Wood. Rough Layered Patina from shrine libations. Gray, Green, and Blue pigments.
The Urhobo produce numerous art forms, including Ivwri (shrine figures), a type of wooden sculpture that is popularly associated with the cult of the hand, and masks and masquerading.
The Urhobo recognize the existence of a dual cosmological system: the spirit world and the physical world. It is believed that everyone in the physical world has a replica in the spiritual world and that these two worlds have great influence over one another.
Urhobo art is not easy to find and quite seldom . They have good age I would say 1930's , the light weight wood has clearly internal oxidation
