Maternity figure - Wood - Provenance Bob Germ - Dogon - Mali

A mid XXth century published Dogon maternity figure from Mali.
H= 45cm

provenance: Bob Germ collection, Hoboken, Belgium.

A DOGON, N’DULERI, primordial maternity figure.
Representing Nommo who in Dogon art is fundamental. Nommo is at the origin of the eight mythical twins, ancestors of mankind,and the first human child she is holding here, almost all human images are related to Nommo and in particular Dogon images of women with one or two children allude to Nommo and the mythical primordial twins and how humans where born.
The baby figure suggest a fully formed, though tiny, adult. If we look at the large female figure with respect to her volumes, planes and relative scale, she becomes an edifice. Apart from the naturalism of her hands, the mother does not interact with the twins, nor do they interact with each other. She is an anthropomorphic temple.
Sacrificial offer remains on the figure.
H= 45 cm.
