Bronze - Bronze - Edan - Ogboni - Nigeria

A Pair of Edan from the secret Ogboni society one of the most important Yoruba-speaking associations in Nigeria.

PROVENANCE: Modou Sow collection, who used to work at the Berg en Dal Africa Museum in Netherland.

HEIGHT: 30 cm , 45 cm on the custom made metal + wood stand ( included in your package )

The initiates wear the EDAN, representing a male figure and a female figure in brass joined by a chain and mounted on small iron spikes. Despite the presence of the pair, the Edan represents only one person and his double of opposite sex. The attachment also underlines the strong bond of "children of the same mother" which unites the members of the same lodge.

We will also notice, in the metal work at Ijebu, the particular attention paid to the almond shaped eyes; indicative of the power of vision !
Of exceptional size, the bold and finely cast pair displaying characteristic iconography. The chain, once attaching the two figures, is missing

CONDITION: This pair has been desacralised by removing the iron the chain and hands.
