Unique book published in 1897:
Dutch artist Marius Bauer came into contact with Swiss journalist and art critic William Ritter while passing through Romania.
He had heard of a folk tale and made it into a French translation.
Upon his return to Amsterdam, Bauer, who had immediately started producing etchings with the story, contacted Klaas Groesbeek, from the Amsterdam bookstore Scheltema & Holkema.
In order to achieve a balanced issue, the decorative artist G.W. Dijsselhof was asked to decorate the text with vignettes.
Book with 19 etchings (illustrations) by Marius Bauer and 48 etchings (fillers and vignettes) by G.W. Dijsselhof. Printed on Japanese paper by Mouton & Cie in The Hague in an issue of 250 [= 180] numbered copies.
Book is originally printed on parchment and on Japanese paper.
All three etchings are printed on Japanese paper. These may have been test prints for this edition.
In this book, the etchings are listed on p. 9, 18 and 19.
