Vanity magazine; a rare complete set, all 37 issues!
Vanity was an Italian fashion magazine that oozed genius.
Not to be compared to Vanity Fair, this is a completely different title and was a magazine entirely about fashion. It only ran for 37 issues, and was published by Conde Nast Italy from 1982-1989.
The majority of the covers, except for two, featured illustrated covers.
The first nine issues were illustrated by Antonio Lopez (as well as the covers, Lopez heavily illustrated throughout), and other artists commissioned to create cover artwork include:
Gilbert & George
Francois Berthoud, and
Mats Gustafson (who recently who recently collaborated with Christian Dior to produce the haute couture book 'Dior' by Mats Gustafson.
The great and eccentric Italian Vogue stylist Anna Piaggi was one of the key editors, as well as Franca Sozzani (later EIC of Vogue Italia).
Anna created this magazine to showcase her favourite designers including Comme des Garcons, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Studio Alchimia, Theirry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Robert Mapplethorpe contributed exclusive work for this fashion and arts magazine.
Contents included photographic fashion editorials shot by the likes of Bill Cunningham, Mapplethorpe, David Bailey,
Roxanne Lowit, Mario Testino and Horst, interviews with creatives and talent of the day, and clubbing/style features,
with a lot of focus on London nightlife in the 80s including The Mud Club.
Karl Lagerfeld contributed many illustrations featuring Chloe (the fashion house he designed for until the 90s), one of which is a collage created exclusively for Vanity by Karl featuring Marie Laurencin, Spandau Ballet and Antonio Lopez - amazing!
Artists featured include Jean Michel Basquiet, William Burroughs, Robert Longo and many creatives starting their career in film, music and the arts. Also featured within this rare set:
PIER PAOLO PASSOLINI
Vanity is an incredible magazine, packed with many contributions from the great Antonio Lopez who virtually defined their style with his distinctive covers.
It’s one of the most sought after titles in our archive.
We have been searching for copies for 15 years and in that time have only managed to create one full set.
In fact we do not know of any other complete runs anywhere in the world.
Its an Italian magazine and the text is in Italian and the artwork speaks the universal language of beauty!
