Illustrated with a full-page engraved title page and 70 engraved maps, plans and schematics (69 of which are double page, and one single page). Second additional title page to Pt. 2. Continuous pagination. 504, 44 [index and appendix, plus final colophon leaf). Bound in contemporary mottled calf, with gilt ruling to boards. Spine richly gilt in compartments, within 6 raised bands. Dark morocco label with gilt lettering. Speckled edges. Ex-libris 'Hopetoun' library, with armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Size: 4to (31.3 × 19.5 cm)

Very good, nice condition!

A superb copy of what Willems calls a 'Magnifique publication', from the Elzevier press in Amsterdam. Dögen worked for the Admiralty in Amsterdam for a considerable time and later became military architect to Friedrich-Wilhelm, to whom this work is dedicated. Provenance: Hopetoun (engraved armorial bookplate).
