Franz Kafka (Prague, 3 July 1883 - Kierling, 3 June 1924) was a German-language writer who is considered one of the most important authors of the twentieth century. His work had a great influence on western literature, especially after his death.
Kafka is especially known as the author of the novels The Trial and The Castle and the novella The Metamorphosis. His work seems to be characterised by a nightmarish, ominous atmosphere (known as Kafkaesque) in which bureaucracy and an impersonal society increasingly take hold of the individual. Kafka's oeuvre is sometimes seen as a symbol of the uprooted man in modern times.
