Posthumous work by Madame de Staël (1766-1817) first conceived this book as a piece in tribute to the glory of her father, Minister Necker; but little by little it became a vast study on the French Revolution as a whole, the Napoleonic regime and the English government system, a model that was completely democratic according to the author. It was published by Baron Auguste de Staël,her son, and by the Duke of Broglie, her daughter Albertine’s husband. Schazmann, Bibliographie des oeuvres de Mme de Stael, 55.
