Sumerian Brown Stone Jemdet Nasr Cylindrical Stamp Seal

Description
Sumerian Brown Stone Jemdet Nasr Cylindrical Stamp Seal
Circa 3000 BC

A fine example of a Sumerian hardstone cylindrical stamp seal, pierced longitudinally on the top for suspension. The seal will come with its modern impression: a zoomorphic creature, possibly a stag, depicted in foliage.

The seal comes with a provenanced note which gives a description of the seal and its history, and signed by W.G. Lambert, an Assyriologist Professor.

Seals have been the main illustrative material in the ancient Near East, and can be found even since 7th millennium BC. However, the carved ones only appear around the 4th millennium BC.

Measurements: circa 3cm length

Provenance: The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980’s-early 1990’s accompanied with a copy of a note from Professor W. G. Lambert.
