France had a vast network of colonies in the Asia-Pacific region of the world in the 19th century. One of its largest colonial concentrations was in a region called Indochina, an area now known as Southeast Asia in and around Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. To better stabilise its colonial monetary system following the British opium wars with China, France introduced a trade dollar for its colonies in the region.
Americans might recognise the female personification on the original French trade dollar introduced in 1885. The seated female figure is very similar to the design of the seated freedom used on American currency in the mid-1800s and even wears a crown formed by rays of sunlight similar to that of the Statue of Liberty offered to the people of the United States.
Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of the 1 oz 2020 French Trade Dollar silver coin. Her Majesty is depicted here in relief right profile created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. A fourth generation portrait created for the Royal Mint, this design shows Her Majesty wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara.
A seated female personification is depicted on the reverse side of the 2020 French Trade Dollar Silver Coins. This impressive recreation of the original 1885 French Trade Dollar features the seated woman with bales of wheat to her right, representing the fertile farmland of French Indochina. On her left, there is a large anchor denoting the French maritime trade throughout the region.
