The Perth Australian Mint started issuing a new silver ounce coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the largest gold nugget ever found. This new bullion is engraved with a drawing of the nugget as well as the date of its discovery, 1869. At the back of the coin there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The Welcome Stranger was also chosen to decorate the first gold bullions produced in Australia from 1986 to 1989.
In February 1869, the miners John Deason and Richard Oates made this discovery in Moliagul in the Australian region of Victoria. Nicknamed "Welcome Stranger", the gold nugget was found only 3 cm deep and had a gross weight of 109.59 kg. Because of its weight it had to be broken down into pieces to be weighed on the bank's scale. Its net weight was 72.02 kg. It was quickly melted down and transferred to the Bank of England.
